Mt. Baker is a dominating presence when looking off the cliff from my front deck. As the snow continues to melt during this year of drought, new small peaks are being revealed which give the mountain a rougher appearance. Normally those small peaks are covered by a smooth layer of snow.
This is a piece I did en plein air, which means it was painted outside rather than from photos. Because the light changes constantly throughout the day, plein air work is usually completed within 2-3 hours, and has a looser, more direct style which I have aspired to for a long time. I was fortunate enough to take a class from Michael Chesley Johnson, an award winning plein air painter who excels in both pastels and oils. With his help, I’ve gained more confidence in my plein air approach.
