I was looking through some photos I took last summer at Horseshoe Bend on the upper Nooksack River near the base of Mt. Baker. The photos were focused on the wild water and the color of the waves and spray. I was having trouble deciding what I wanted to paint until I noticed that part of the problem was the location of a small part of the background. I kept wanting to make that small area prominent in the painting design, but it was in the wrong place. Finally I tried cropping out that small portion–and the part I cut out became the subject for my painting. The colors, the light, the stillness–I love this spot.
Reminds me of Robert Frost: “The woods are lovely, dark, and deep…”
